How to find our way in the film world between the 5000 movies that are produced in the world every year? (80 from Canada) Usually, it’s Rotten Tomatoes that guides my choice, but if I’m looking for a quick lesson of cinema and witty prose in top of a mere percentage, I love to read the articles of some well-known critics like Rogert Ebert or Jonathan Rosenbaum, or also others a bit less known that write for free on the internet, simply by love for the 7th art. In Montreal, we have one that’s very good: he’s called Kevin Laforest. His website: www.montrealfilmjournal.com.

With 5 years of experience as an employee at Boite Noire, a few years as a critic for Voir and 11 years a MFJ, Kevin in certainly what one can call a connoisseur. He watches about 3 new movies each week (that can be followed in his Moviewatching Log), and him and his collaborator Joseph Bélanger (from the blog www.blacksheepreviews.com), publish about 2 new reviews each week. Kevin also offers us TOP 10 lists of each year since 1998, interviews (notably with Wes Anderson, David Cronenberg and the oh-so-pretty Heather Graham) and integral reviews of the filmography of some directors as different as Quentin Tarantino, Billy Wilder et Denys Arcand HERE.

End of decenny obliges, Kevin is also in the process of doing a commented TOP 10 list of the 2000s (he still has 3 movies to choose). For the moment, his choices are : The Fountain, There Will Be Blood, Dogville, The Lord of The Rings, Signs, Kill Bill et Almost Famous. All big-budget films. When I asked him about it, he answered, ‘I am very proud to reject the idea that the Hollywood productions and/or genre cinema are by definition inferior to the independent, foreign and/or d’auteurs’. I would like to know what you think about that, but I am happy to see that there’s at least one critic out there that hasn’t got bias against ‘pop’ movies.

Before divulging his 3 last choices, Kevin is going to post his TOP 10 list of 2009 this weekend. I secretly hope that Inglourious Basterds is in the choices and not District 9, but as they say: everyone to his taste.

Christmas is in a week!!

This week, rather than offering you something new, I will give you some feedback on the photo project that we did recently and that you have witness if you visited the site during the month of November. I remind you our concept: we had asked 20 young Montreal photographers to send us a photo on the theme Subjective Montreal. Each day during the month of November, we published one of these photos on the homepage of 4MTL

The photographers all have respected the theme, while interpreting it differently. For some of them, the theme lead them to a certain expressionism, but for most of them, realism was the key, with a particular attention to the details of everyday life. Like we wanted it: no photos of the Olympic Stadium, no photos of the Mont-Royal, no photos of St-Joseph Oratory, but rather photos of anonymous people, of more or less unknown places, in short of Montreal that we meet in the street every morning while going to school of work.

I would also like to share with you two personal remarks. First, I notice that my favorite pictures we those that made the most original use of color, often by contrasting lively colors on a colder background. The moderation is the key: too colorful seems to be like not enough. Secondly, I think that the realism in the image, that was forced for many by the use of digital cameras, gave the most interesting results. Certainly because cameras have for first goal to capture in an exact way instants of a visual reality, and the photos that didn’t seek to modify this reality are those that had the bigger effect on me. Of course, those are only my opinions, and I’d love to hear about yours.

Finally, I want to thank all the photographs involved for their great generosity. Not only did they gave some of their time for absolutely no money, but they also took the project seriously, which explain the great quality of the photos that we received. I have the pleasure to name them again:

Oh here’s a refreshing idea! Talk about movies presented to a specific public but which could interest an important amount of people!

“The Dimestore Video” is in this category; a purely skate 20 minutes video produced by Philippe Lavoie (himself skater) and which triggers a bunch of fantastic emotions to the spectators. This kind of videos are usually and too often presented with only performed calculated tricks without making place for fun, imagnation and emotions that performers have. As opposed to “The Dimestore Video”, where we can see young katers perform a “hollie” over an sleeping hobo. Tere is even interesting content for people who likes to see others hurt themselves… naturally, as in any good skate video! As a proof, during the presentation organised last Thursday, the room was full of people reactign with cries to any critical moment

The video takes place in different nice places such as Barcelone, San Fransisco, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and few others. Phillipe accordingly creates an instantaneous success around him. He films right on the stop creaing amazing angles or directly on a skateboard in order to take us right into action. It is then a movie simply and principally axed on skateboard but its hedonistic aspects and its hip-hop music reminding us of the lost in the ’95s soul of the performers adds a lot to the video.

As a matter of fact, a beautiful piece of cinematographic amateur art for anybody who loves skaeboarding or anybody who simply wants to be entertained and have a good time admiring amazing skaters who performed at their best!

For more infos about the Dimestore Crew, I suggest you see their website.

And 28 years after the first rap song to be # 1 in the US (paradoxally, a Blondie Song called Rapture), it is still the Jaz-Z, Lil Wayne and Kanye West that fill that charts.

It’s been a while that we want to talk to you about rap, and the occasion was too nice this week, when we got proposed an interview with Manu Militari, who released yesterday , after the succes of Voix de Faits in 2006, his secound LP: Crime d’Honneur (trad: Crime of Honor). Confortably installed in the loges of Musique Plus just before the lauch of his album Monday night, we discussed his new record, his conception of rap and a few hot subjects in the news. Here’s the result.

colio: Was it hard to find inspiration after a break of 3 years?

MM: I don’t think so. It’s true that creation is like sport: you have to work it non-stop or you lose it. Once you’re into it, it’s much more easy than when you take a break. But at the same time, when you take a break, it gets you to get more inspiration and to see other things. But really, I’ve had a rough life, I’m not a youngster, I have many things to say.

colio: What did you want to do differently on Crime d’Honneur in comparison with Voix de Faits?

MM: I wanted the text to be better written than on Voix de Faits, I wanted to do better, I wanted to get the best of myself. I think that I was already far of certain clichés, I wanted to go even further. I also wanted to get closer to what I am. It’s certain that life is a perpetual search, we want to know who we are all our life, but I think that I’m close to it now.

colio: We met a graffitist a few weeks ago that told us that graffiti wasn’t a form of art but rather a way to blow off steam. Do you have think, a bit in the same way, that rap is not a form of art?

MM: I perfectly understand what the graffitist that you met wanted to say. I though that on rap for a long time: that it wasn’t an art form, that there were rules to follow, a kind of street code. But personally, I don’t want to play that game anymore. I am in the world of rap, but I feel free to say whatever I want and I don’t owe nothing to anyone.

colio: I will ask you what you think of a few hot subjects in the news that, I think, you have an opinion on and I will let you answer anything you want or even not answer if you don’t feel like. What to you think of the recession?

MM: (pause) Not much.

colio: What do you think of the climate crisis?

MM: I don’t know what to say. I could tell you that we’re all controled by assholes. It’s the same thing for the recession. There are people who put all the money in their pockets. The bankers in the US never made as much money as when some people lost everything. It’s a bit the same thing with the climate crisis. It’s always the same people who exploit the same people. I’m happy that some people make things move forward, but I don’t really know what to say.

colio : What do you think of the war in Afghanistan?

MM: It’s the same assholes that make money on the death of people. That’s something that I’m frustrated about. People get into that, are brainwashed and are not interested in looking for the truth. It’s a subject that moves me. Some people are in the climate crisis, it’s their fight, and I’m moved by that too. If I were listening myself, I would make records on that only. People don’t seem to know what happens, they don’t understand that we send Rambos to kill innocents. Some people think that I’m wrong, but I think that they’re the ones who don’t understand.

colio: What do you think of the Quebec independence?

MM: Then again, it’s the same thing. They’re all assholes. Whether we’re led by Québécois or Canadians, it’s the same thing. Of heart, I am profoundly Québécois and when our honor is broken, I’m hurt. But I’m not sure what to think. I don’t like to go into politics and for me, Quebec independence is politics. That’s why I won’t get an advocate of it. I would like to be pround of my flag, but at the same time, what would it mean: that I’m proud of a country, a governement that as bad as another one. Would I be more proud because they speak French? I don’t think so.

colio: Is there a subject in the news that makes you hopeful?

MM: Fast like that, I can’t think of one. (long pause) I don’t see one, I have no idea, le gros.

Thanks a lot to Manu Militari. Crime d’honneur is on sale everywhere since yesterday and Manu will announce his next shows very soon on his website.

You can view the clip of the first single of Crime d’honneur here and I advise you to listen once again to the 3 singles of Voix de Faits: La Traversée du Lac Nasser, Voix de Faits et L’empreinte.

For other information on Quebec rap, I refer you to specialists of the subject, the guys of Ghetto Érudit that have a show on the air of CISM saturday from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, that’s also available on the web here.

colio (a big thank you to Raphaëlle Brault for the photos)

H.
Harvard Bass is a balanced and pure combination of a distinguished and clear minimal-tech sound sometimes fatten with vibrations, bass and drums particularly vicious but so mind blasting in a healthy way!
Of the 40 film festivals in Montreal that I’m aware of (I will give you the full list someday), about 10 are focused on ethno-cultural groups that have an important community in our city. It’s the case of the Montreal Brazilian Film Festival which, since 3 years now, heateans our late autumn and offers us a perfect occasion to discover all the wealth of the brazilian culture.

We all know that the risk is quite big when you’re looking to choose a film from a country that doesn’t have a huge cinematographic tradition: here’s a little selection of films that seemed to me the most interesting.

- Friday/Sunday 7 PM : the opening feature, Chega de Saudade, directed by the excellent director from Sao Paulo, Lais Bodanzky.

- Saturday 7PM : The documentary film Palavra (en)cantada, winner of the prize of best documentary at the gala of cinematographic industry in Brazil this year.

- Tuesday 7PM : Se nada mais der certo, the drama that won all the important prizes in Brazil this year. Trailer here

- Wednesday 7PM : Madame Sata, released in 2003, a film that got discussed about a lot in the cinema world for good… and bad reasons.

- Thursday 7PM : Orfeu Negro, the only film of the french director Marcel Camus, with a soundtrak of the legend of bossa nova Antonio Carlos Jobim. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Movie and of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1959-1960.

N.B. All the films are presented in their original version with French subtitles, except Madame Sata which is presented with English subtitles.

No matter where you’re from, the meeting this week is at Cinema du Parc. If you’re a big fan of the iberic accent but like me, you’re session ending has begun a bit earlier than usual, fique tranquilo: you will be able to see with the Montreal Ibero-Latinoamerican Film Festival (Festivalissimo) in March.
