French Invasion: Wizestar
I have a scoop for you guys (via Jarco Weiss): it’s Poney Poney who does the basslines for Justice. I already knew that they were pre-recording their live shows and that their songs were basically covers of minor hits of the 70s, but if, added to all of that, they don’t even do their basslines themselves… (apparently, they also stole Daft Punk’s synths… and Soulwax’s drums)
Anyway, while Gaspard and Xavier are jerking off in their basements, there are some Frenchs in Montreal who work hard to bring us super electro quality 2009. Their names are Jarco Weiss and Julien Stern. They met in May 2008 when Jarco – a veteran hip hop French DJ – got booked by Julien for a show at SAT with Beast and aRTIST oF tHE yEAR. They immediately fell in love: about 9 months later, Jarco officially moves to Montreal. It’s the birth of Wizestar.
Since then, Jarco and Julien have realeased many remixes (among others, Omnikron’s Comme à la télévision et my favorite Major Lazer’s Hold the Line) and right now they’re working on their first EP that will be released in February of next year (with featurings of Spoek Mathambo, Induce and Julie Dépanneur). But that’s not all: starting tonight, Wizestar is launching its new residency at Syndrome, a bar in Mile End that’s usually not a very cool place, but that will now take fire every Thursday night. It’s also the bar that sells the cheapest beer in town (the name of the night is: Discount). That’s just a detail though.
Just so we can know what to expect, they’re offering us a mixtape that’s just out of the oven. You can download it below, but watch out: it’s still very hot. (For those interested, the artwork of the mixtape has been made by Jarco, who has been a graphic designer in a Shanghai for a while and who also makes the artwork for We Blast Out. By the way, it’s his girlfriend on the picture.)
